RNI Registration in India: Process, Requirements & Expert Assistance

What is RNI Registration?

RNI Registration is the commonly used term for registering a newspaper or periodical in India. Under the current Press and Registration of Periodicals Act, 2023, publishers of periodicals containing public news or comments on public news are required to obtain registration from PRGI.

The process covers title selection, owner and publisher details, printing press information, publication details, and submission of the required documents through the Press Sewa Portal.

Who Needs RNI Registration?

If you are planning to publish a newspaper or eligible periodical at regular intervals, registration is an important compliance requirement. The law covers periodicals containing public news or comments on public news, while books and scientific, technical, and academic journals are outside its scope.

RNI Registration Process

The registration process is now largely online:

  1. Create an account on the Press Sewa Portal.
  2. Submit proposed title details and publication information.
  3. Add the publisher and provide the required details.
  4. The publisher completes the registration application.
  5. Details of the printing press are added through the portal.
  6. Submit the application with the prescribed processing fee and supporting documents.
  7. PRGI and the concerned authority examine the application.
  8. Once approved, the digital Certificate of Registration can be downloaded from the portal.
